Categories:

ARROW commissioned this comprehensive scoping study on young people’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) as part of the Right Here Right Now (RHRN 2) initiative, a global partnership dedicated to advancing youth SRHR advocacy. This initiative is currently active in 10 countries across Asia and Africa, with focused implementation in Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Nepal within Asia and the Pacific.

Purpose of the Study

The primary objective of this study is to assess the current landscape of young people’s SRHR in the Asia-Pacific region, identifying key trends, challenges, and advocacy gaps. A particular emphasis is placed on the status and effectiveness of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) programs, which are vital for empowering youth with knowledge and rights related to their sexual and reproductive health.

Key Findings

  • SRHR Situation Overview: The study highlights varying levels of access to sexual and reproductive health services among young people in Asia-Pacific, influenced by socio-cultural, economic, and policy factors.
  • Advocacy Gaps: Despite progress, there remain significant advocacy gaps, particularly in promoting inclusive and rights-based CSE across the region.
  • Country-Specific Insights: Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Nepal exhibit unique challenges and opportunities in advancing youth SRHR, reflecting diverse cultural and policy environments.

Importance of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE)

Comprehensive Sexuality Education is a cornerstone for improving young people’s SRHR outcomes. The study underscores the need for:

  • Inclusive, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive CSE curricula.
  • Stronger policy support and implementation frameworks.
  • Engagement of young people as active stakeholders in program design and advocacy.

Recommendations

To strengthen youth SRHR advocacy and education in the Asia Pacific, the study recommends:

  • Enhancing multi-sectoral collaboration among governments, civil society, and youth organizations.
  • Increasing investment in CSE programs that are evidence-based and rights-affirming.
  • Expanding access to youth-friendly SRHR services and information.
  • Building capacity for youth-led advocacy to ensure sustainable change.
