HRC58: Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to a Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment

This oral statement was broadcasted at the 58th Session of the Human Rights Council Annual Discussion on Rights of the Child.

My name is Menka Goundan and I am making this statement on behalf of the Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW).

We acknowledge the report of the Special Rapporteur and agree with the urgency of the climate crisis and the threats it poses to the ocean ecosystem.  We welcome the acknowledgement of women in the report particularly in the undervalued but significant role they play in fisheries and ocean economics.

Climate change is not a gender-neutral phenomenon as it disproportionately impacts women, and girls in all their diversities. Women in the coastal areas and women whose livelihoods depend on the health of the ocean are no exception. We concur with the findings and the recommendations of the report and hope that women are not left behind in ocean and climate governance.
