Weaving Loss, Memory & Resilience: A Feminist Study of Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD) and Gender-Inclusive Disaster risk reduction under the Sendai Framework in Pakistan

Categories:

Taana Baana™: Webs of Loss and Resilience – A Feminist Study of Non-Economic Loss and Damage and Gender-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction in Pakistan presents findings from Care-centred Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) conducted with climate-affected women and transgender communities in Karachi and Upper Chitral. The report explores how climate change reshapes everyday life through the emotional, relational, bodily autonomy, and ecological and cultural dimensions of Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD). It introduces Taana Baana™, an original feminist framework and participatory reflection methodology developed by DASTAK Foundation to make invisible climate losses visible through interconnected webs of lived experience. The report concludes with practical recommendations for integrating Feminist NELD into disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and Loss and Damage governance, alongside a participatory reflection tool that supports community dialogue, reflection, and learning.

Taana Baana™ Framework Development

The Taana Baana™ Framework was conceptually developed by Hira Amjad through DASTAK Foundation’s Care-centred Feminist Participatory Action Research on Non-Economic Loss and Damage. While the framework reflects Hira Amjad’s conceptual leadership, it was co-created through dialogue with climate-affected women and transgender communities in Pakistan, whose lived experiences, reflections, and collective wisdom shaped its development. The field research was led by Huma Akbar and Tuba Rafi, the data analysis was supported by Fatima Rasheed and Farhan Ahmad, and the visual design and creative journey of the framework were co-developed with Wasfa Kamal. The framework therefore represents both an original conceptual contribution and a collective feminist process of knowledge generation.

Above all, the Taana Baana™ Framework is rooted in the generosity, courage, and knowledge of the women and transgender community members who entrusted DASTAK Foundation with their stories. Their stories remain the foundation of this work.
