Even with the commitment from the Lao Government to achieving the Goal of the VIII Fifth Year Plan of Socio-Economic Development Plan of the Lao PDR and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the country has yet enacted laws and policies on adolescents and young people. A life skills education system was introduced in 2003, which promotes an approach to address HIV and AIDS, reproductive health, STIs and drugs, but with no specific subjects on sex education. The brief addressed the existing gaps of the policies in Lao in relation to comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) by pushing for education beyond HIV and AIDS, and a more inclusive and participatory role of young people in decision making. The brief further posits specific recommendations to the government that include active interventions to better equip the education system in Laos by including adequate information on all elements of CSE.
