This policy brief aims to provide an overview of the situation of sexual and reproductive rights (SRR) within Maldives and to give recommendations to relevant stakeholders based on the findings of this brief. The brief uses key indicators mentioned in the Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Center for Women (ARROW)’s publication “An Advocates’ Guide: Strategic Indicators for Universal Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights”, and it looks at, amongst other things, policies on sexual and reproductive health, grounds under which abortion is legal, HIV and AIDS policies, extent of gender-based violence, legislation and policies on sexual orientation and grievance redress mechanisms for sexual and reproductive health services. The brief will also look at the interplay of Islamic Sharia and its influence on the access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) within Maldives.
