International Conference on Population & Development (ICPD) Monitoring + 5

In Malaysia, the term “rights” seems to have connotations of abortion, free sex and homosexuality. Due to this, the term reproductive health is preferred to reproductive rights. Similarly, the word “equity” is preferred over “equality” because of a traditional belief that if men and women are equal, this contravenes the religious interpretationand concept of leadership, which is regarded as a male domain. This article looks into the different issues and themes surrounding sexual and reproductive health and rights in Malaysia such as maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS, breast and cervical cancer, domestic violence, contraception, fertility trends and population policy and family planning. Read about it in Taking up the Cairo Challenge – Country Study of Malaysia.
